Live-in care: a real alternative to a nursing home in Cork
For many families in Cork the conversation starts at the kitchen table, often after a fall, a hospital stay or a worrying night. Nobody wants to ask the question, but it comes anyway: can Mom or Dad stay at home?
For many people, they can. With live-in care, one dedicated carer lives in the house and is there through the day and the night. They help with washing and dressing, cook meals the way you like them, prompt medication and keep you company over a cup of tea. If the night gets difficult, someone is already in the house.
Home keeps hold of the things that make a life: the dog, the garden, neighbours calling in, the radio on in the morning. It also means one-to-one attention instead of sharing a team with a whole unit.
Live-in care is not right for everyone, and we will always tell you honestly if another setting would suit better. Where the home is safe and the person wants to stay, it is a well-supported alternative.

Common questions
Questions families across Cork, Limerick and Kerry ask us
What is live-in care, and how is it different from home support visits?
With live-in care, one carer moves into your home and is there day and night, with agreed breaks and relief cover so your care never has a gap. With home support visits, carers call at set times, from a short morning visit to several visits a day.
Live-in care suits people who need help through the night, who should not be left alone, or who are at risk of falls and confusion. Visits suit people who are mostly independent but need support with washing, meals and company. We will help you pick the right level, and we can change it as your needs change.
Can live-in care really be an alternative to a nursing home in Ireland?
For many people it can be. If your home is safe and you want to stay in it, live-in care gives you one-to-one attention, your own routine and your own surroundings. It is not right for every situation, particularly where someone needs round-the-clock nursing care, and we will tell you honestly if we think another setting would suit you better.
Nursing home costs, including support through the Fair Deal scheme, are a separate matter, so ask us for a clear written quote and compare it with the other options on the table.
How quickly can care start in North Cork, Limerick and Kerry?
It depends on the kind of care and on carer availability in your area. We will give you a realistic start date on the first phone call, and we prioritise urgent situations such as a hospital discharge.
Are your carers Garda vetted and trained?
Yes. Every carer is Garda vetted and has references checked before their first visit. New carers complete an induction, shadow an experienced colleague and are supervised and spot-checked once they start. A registered nurse oversees clinical standards, and carers get extra training for needs such as dementia.
Who pays for care at home? Is there any State help?
Families pay in different ways. Some people receive State-funded home support arranged through their local health office or public health nurse. Others pay privately, and some home care costs may qualify for tax relief, so ask Revenue or your accountant what applies to you.
Whatever route you take, we give you the full cost in writing before care begins, with no hidden extras.
